Small Shipyard Grants
The Small Shipyard Grants program, managed by the U.S. Maritime Administration, provides assistance to make capital and related improvements in small shipyards located in or near maritime communities. The intended outcome of the program is to foster efficiency, competitive operations, and quality ship construction, repair, and reconfiguration, in these facilities. Past grants have ranged from $300,000 to just over $750,000. Equipment funded has included shelters, vessel transporters, drydocks, cutting systems, cranes, metal working and welding equipment, and lifting equipment and cranes.
Congress has made $10 million dollars available for this program in the 2017 fiscal year. This will cover between 10 and 20 awards. MARAD will release the Notice of Funding Opportunity by May 25, 2017, and applicants will have 30 calendar days to respond.
This program is highly competitive! Based on past rounds expect more than 100 applicants seeking, in total, many times the available amount of funding. Interested shipyards should be prepared to devote time and effort to preparing the strongest packet possible. Applicants are required to prepare a quantitative analysis of project benefits and provide financial and legal information about their business.
